The settlement had 13 mariners' and 11 master mariners', some of whom owned their own schooners or sailed for one of the merchant firms. This meant that there were often a lot of vessels in the harbour. The term mariners' refer to the schooner men sailing the Island's coastal waters and across the gulf, to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The master mariners' were referred to as Captain's and were known for their international ocean experience, sailing to the United States, Europe and the Carribean. Boston, Portugal, Bermuda and Jamacia were well known ports to them.

Act of 1836, had provided a five year budget plan of 2100 per year. That amount was to be divided among the electoral districts for their few settlements with schools in order to pay their teachers the sum of 10 per annum. Such a grant was not received for Channel's school until 1855, when it became part of the Burgeo and La Poile district.

In 1864 the Journal for the House of Assembly notes that the amount of 48 British pounds was allocated for the upkeep of the main road in east end Channel.

Included in the other occupations in Channel were four men listed as "mechanics". They were Michael Keating and James Keating who were carpenters, and, Michael Murray and Anthony Fergaery who were iron workers or blacksmiths. There were four unskilled men working as general labourers. The local merchants listed were John Guillam, Thomas Guillam, Michael Kidston and Alexander Waddell. Augustine Macdonald was listed as a clerk, which usually meant a bookkeeper. He may have worked for one of the merchants. The closest medical service was down the south coast at La Poile where Dr. Thomas Brown, a physician and surgeon had his residence.
