Through the well lit, low windows, you can glimpse a glorious array of treasures, centuries old jewel hued glass goblets, precious silver ware , soft velvets and Edwardian tortoise shell, all arranged with care and artistic flair into a cosily exotic yet quintessentially English tableau of tangible history.

At one time used as a mortuary for the nearby chapel, the building was purchased by a Cumbrian born lover of antiques called Chris Carter, and now the only chips to be found are the gently knocked corners of a Georgian cabinet, and the only scratchings are on the base of hand blown wine glasses which glint in rows of amber, emerald, amethyst and deepest Prussian blues.

By the time of the World Cup 2006, it had become to a cafe with a wide screen TV and the best way to enjoy the fare was in a state of inebriation after falling out of the Horse and Jockey to which it was attached.

It is, of course, possible to look up the details of any antique item and know its year of manufacture and thus be 'knowledgeable' as a dealer but there's a real sense of personal excitement from Chris Carter about each piece. He is particularly keen on glassware. A row of Edwardian water tumblers on one shelf gleam with opaline iridescence, like petrol on water. He picks up a 1780's wine glass, declaring "Nelson was serving his apprenticeship when Nike Grey Sweatshirt Mens

editor, Manchester Evening News, Mitchell Henry House, Hollinwood Avenue, Chadderton, Oldham OL9 8EP.

A graduate of UMIST and now living above the shop while renovating his Elizabethan farmhouse, Chris has harboured a love for antiques since early childhood, spending all his pocket money on pieces bought at antique fairs.

The Horse and Jockey is not the same Horse and Jockey out of which punters fell before falling into the old Chorlton Green Chippy. There are certainly those who lament the changes at the former, either for the loss of a local's local or because they don't feel there's as much soul to the upmarket version of the pub which calls itself the 'Inn on the Green.'

And this one does. Chris Carter is determined to buck this trend. "People", he muses, "want to feel and see and touch the things they buy particularly when they are one off, unrepeatable objects." And there is something heart warming about the knowledge and passion he has for the pieces he displays. After years of decluttering, minimalising and as Ikea insisted 'chucking out the chintz' suburban living rooms and city centre mill conversions are awash with chocolate leather sofas, chalk white walls and dark woods all crying out for a splash of the past.

ON THE corner of Chorlton Green, is a pair of knocked through Victorian cottages which have just become more Dickensian than they've been since, well, the time of Dickens.

this was made". The glass is small for a wine glass. "People drank wine in smaller measures then," he says, and leads me to a candle apron made of Vaseline glass, so called because of its milky translucence.

There are a few in the Levenshulme Antiques Centre, in the suburbs old town hall buildings, but nothing which looks and feels quite like a perfect antique shop.

Greater Manchester Business Week is the region's number one provider of business news andfeatures, targeting a bespoke business audience with 12,687 copies every Thursday.

"I spent lots of time with my grandparents who were themselves brought up very much in the Victorian and Edwardian traditions. I can still sense the smell of their home the perfume of antiquity big bowls of fruit and flowers in swirling glass vases," he enthuses.

Chris Carter has called it Chip Shop Antiques, and whilst its recent culinary history is not one everyone wants to recall, it seems to me the perfect name. Amidst two masks carved out of single, massive pieces of amber is a 1920s opium pipe, its casing decorated in what I take to be a fascinating duck egg blue fabric. This, I am told, is shagreen sharkskin which wouldn't go down well with the local vegans, but aside from the occasional lapse of political correctness, Chris Carter points out Nike Hoodie Orange that antiques dealers are the original recyclers the greenest of green.

It is easy to find shops selling lower end curio bric a brac tat, and in the right Cheshire villages there's no problem sniffing out snooty little shops specialising in that very English style of understated tastelessness which dealers insist are 'fine'antiques. This little place is full of sumptuous intrigue and just what the suburb needs.

And true, it's not a natural progression on a Friday night to tumble out of a boozer and find yourself gagging for a Napoleonic era inlaid hairbrush but it's been a long time since the chip shop in this historical enclave was somewhere people wanted to go. Environmentally, antiques made two hundred years ago are still serving a purpose and while it might have been a fun idea to wrap them in newspaper, this might have been taking the chippy heritage a little too far.

It's an odd time, one might imagine, to open an antiques shop. Others all around the country have closed down, citing the internet and the shift to minimalist interiors, not to mention the economic downturn as reasons why independent antiques emporia cannot survive. And it is true Chorlton doesn't have any other real antiques shops, and neither does Didsbury since the closure of Didsbury Antiques on School Lane.

Compared with the proliferation of polystyrene boxes, sauce sachets and plastic forks, an antique shop is as green as well The Green.
