From this otherwise thoughtful editorial, these three comments are wildly inaccurate and off base. The newspaper can neither substantiate them nor identify the WYDOT official who supposedly said them. Transportation CommissionCody

So, we can understand how WYDOT would want to temper the response, and get out ahead of what might Nike Long Sleeve Thermal Hoodie be the inevitable public backlash that will come with paying more and not solving the problem.

We've been down this road before when it comes to discussing the Wyoming Department of Transportation and funding.

The challenge, though, is that road funding has little bearing on reality. That is, the process of funding roads isn't just a matter of need. It's based on a political game that requires WYDOT to ask lawmakers for money. It requires WYDOT to play politics, insisting that new money it's getting from a tax increase is destined for raiding by money hungry lawmakers. More road funding means lawmakers must convince taxpayers they need to spend more or Nike Gray Jacket

We don't blame WYDOT necessarily. It is in the unenviable position of getting more money and still being unable to complete the job fixing all the roads that need it.

That's the problem: There's really no way of knowing the true picture until it's too late when a bridge crumbles or roads become impassable.

At WYDOT, we appreciate the public discussion on Wyoming's Transportation system. This editorial contains some characterizations of the relationship between the department and the Legislature that are not accurate, as well as assertions about what we believe the Legislature might do in the future, which definitely do not reflect our views. We hope it never gets that bad in the Cowboy State.

We've said before and it bears repeating: A gas tax increase doesn't solve the problem. It doesn't even come close. That means the gas tax increase wasn't the answer. It only made the problem a little less serious and bought politicians a little more time to come up with a more permanent solution one which is still uncertain.

The constant political bickering and infighting for road money and prioritization of projects underscore both the importance of roads to our communities and the need for a longer term solution. That is, we fight about roads in Wyoming because they're so darn important. Yet, the back and forth from lawmakers and WYDOT also demonstrates a dysfunction.

We hope the lawmakers haven't bought into the notion that the problem is fixed. Until we come up with a more permanent, stable funding solution for our roads, this needs to be a priority for lawmakers most of whom have to travel hundreds of miles just to get to the state's Capitol.

The challenge for Wyoming is knowing how much will be needed in order to fix the problem. It seems like road repair and construction is a never ending problem, consuming as much or conversely, as little as lawmakers want to throw at it.

Wyoming residents might naturally get tricked into believing that they'll see a big improvement in roads. Or, they might even believe that the road issue is solved because they're paying more at the gas pump.

cut more to improve roads, neither of which voters are eager to hear.

We believe WYDOT when it says that more money is needed to fix or maintain roads throughout the state. It doesn't take a WYDOT official to feel the effects of potholes or roads that could stand a good repaving.

It's really hard to tell the truth from politics.

To be fair to lawmakers, though, they haven't pulled back WYDOT funding. And, we'll have to believe that lawmakers from every corner of the state are equally interested in good roads since they're so vital to getting anywhere in this spread out state.

It's too early to tell whether lawmakers will pull money from WYDOT as they look to close funding gaps. However, the recent announcement by WYDOT is more borne out of politics than any reality.

They of any group should know how serious the problem is.

WYDOT's most recent public statement warned residents in Natrona County they could expect absolutely no change in the roads despite an increase at the gas pumps that supposedly would speed up maintenance. Instead, WYDOT officials told the Natrona County commissioners that any increased funding from the gas tax increase would probably just be cannibalized by marauding legislators looking to shore up the state's budget.

It's amazing how little time the gas tax increase bought us, though. Now, just days before the gas hike goes into effect, WYDOT is warning folks they won't seen any increased funds.
